However, the animations are not only playing anymore for Gerlach. He’s been earning his daily bread with Flash for five years — the software that makes it possible to produce multimedia animations for the Internet. “ I wanted to make something with sound and graphics and was looking for a programme to combine both” remembers Gerlach the beginning in 1998. “I encountered Flash 3 that gave me options to move images, add sounds and implement user interactions”
During one year studying abroad in Manchester, Gerlach started the project “Jumping Jokes — Home of bizarre animation” — one of the first websites which exclusively presented Flash-animations. The odd greeting cards and games with the touch of British humour helped Gerlach to get his first commercial jobs. Besides works for some of the local radio stations and MTV, the Flash-expert imparted his knowledge in seminars at Halle University.
During the past months Gerlach produced some complex Flash-applications for the ARD hospital series “In aller Freundschaft”. Now you can visit the film locations on a virtual tour or you can interactively explore the characters of the series on their website.
Not at least the news magazine “Der Spiegel” paid attention to the man from Halle. They published his “Anitainment News Quiz” as a link tip. Right on time to the tenth birthday of the software, Gerlach moved into his own office in Ernestus Street. With the opening of his Anitainment Studios, the multimedia expert wants to have room for new ideas and larger projects.
